Pwllheli v Bangor Junior Ladies

SUNDAY APRIL 20th

Bangor Junior Ladies played a rare away fixture against a strong Pwllheli side. Fielding 10 a side Bangor took a little time to settle down and organise themselves when they had possession however their defence continued to show great improvement and although Pwllheli got through for a couple of tries Bangor never gave up trying even in the face of some aggressive play from Pwllheli. Their persistence and team effort resulted in an excellent and well deserved try by Elin Lloyd Jones.

The second half saw Bangor give an outstanding display of their rucking and mauling skills. Every team member was involved in a prolonged and effective period of pressure which saw the girls recycling the ball again and again and working their way up field. Despite their pressure not resulting in a try they outplayed Pwllheli in a wonderful display of skills and all kept their heads even when faced with unnecessary physical and verbal abuse from the opposition.

Once again this was an outstanding display of how hard work in training results in a good game performance. As we have come to expect the girls did everything that was asked of them and continue to improve. WELL DONE TO YOU ALL.

Many thanks to all the girls and to all parents who transported and supported the girls.

Bangor Junior Ladies v Glossop Sunday April 13th

Bangor Junior Ladies gave Glossop a warm Welsh welcome on their first trip to Wales.

It was obvious from the outset that they had an older and bigger team than our core of players.

Despite Glossop being the dominant team Bangor were impressive by putting into practice many of the skills that they have worked so hard on in recent training sessions with great improvement in the rucks and mauls and greater awareness of their defence. They played well as a team and each player contributed greatly to the game.

Glossop did score a number of tries by taking advantage of their greater experience and physicality. However Bangor played with great courage and bravery and were unlucky not to score on a number of occasions.

The game was played in an excellent spirit with both teams obviously enjoying the encounter all the girls were a credit to themselves and their clubs.

Both teams enjoyed a meal in the clubhouse afterwards and Glossop invited Bangor for a return match next season.

Many thanks to everyone who helped to make it an enjoyable day.

U17'S FRIENDLY

BANGOR 5 - PWLLHELI 25

SUNDAY 2nd MARCH

Bangor Ladies U17 lost at home to  Pwllheli on Sunday 2nd March.  Bangor coaches were pleased to see a squad of 17 players, all keen to play the game despite it being the first match for a few. Pwllheli got off to a strong start and caught Bangor on the back foot which led to them conceding two tries.  The Bangor girls put some good rucking into practice and managed to get the ball wide to Rhian who scored a cracking try through the feet of the opposition. In the second half a mixture of  poor fitness levels, injuries, an unaggressive defence and match inexperience within the Bangor camp meant that Pwllheli crossed the Bangor try line to score another two tries. Despite the loss Bangor Captain, Ffion Thomas praised the players for their enthusiasm and for improving on previous performances.  Although disappointed with the final score Bangor coaches were pleased to see certain aspects of the game being executed well and noted that several girls played particularly well.  The squad will continue to train on Friday evenings (6-7.30 pm) and Sunday mornings (10.30 -12.00pm)

MERMAIDS AND BANGOR TOGETHER

ACTION FROM THE GAME

Colwyn Bay U17 Mermaids travelled to Bangor on Sunday morning to play a friendly match against Bangor writes Kumari Tilakawardane.  There were some attempts at jokes when spectators realised the Bay were sponsored by ‘Food Glorious Food’, a local catering company, and Bangor by the Aga shop.  This turned out to be apt, as the Mermaids certainly were cooking on gas! (Coincidentally, the referee was sponsored by Warburton’s bread – so it was a veritable ‘feast’ of rugby!)

Straight from kick off Colwyn Bay threatened, and after a few phases, borrowed U14 Mermaid Ellie Evans ran clear for the first try of the morning.  The Mermaids had virtually all the possession, but didn’t make quite the use of it they would have hoped, only scoring another 3 tries in the first half; a great bursting run from the captain Joely Benton, a well worked try scored by second row Abi Beards, and one from scrum-half Anna Parkin.

In the latter half, Colwyn Bay allowed Bangor to field an extra two players for game practice, and when Bangor were awarded a penalty early on, it seemed their over-lap would pay off, until the Mermaids turned the ball over and Sarah Johnston broke through to score beneath the posts.  A second for Ellie Evans soon followed, and winger Emily Jones was very unlucky not to score a try moments later. This was made up for, however, when Ellie Rawicki scored a Shane Williams-esque try in the corner.  Several good rucks for the Bay awarded Anna Parkin her second try of the day, and Kumari Tilakawardane was denied another try for the Mermaids due to a high tackle.  Jane Owen kicked excellently; converting 5 of the 8 tries, and Sarah Johnston in the unfamiliar role of hooker won all the scrums, both Colwyn Bay’s and Bangor’s put ins.

Credit must go to Bangor, who have improved significantly since the last time the two teams met, at the beginning of the season.  All in all, a rewarding trip for the Mermaids, who played a great game 10 against 12, winning the game 50-0.  An excellent Colwyn Day.

Bangor Junior Ladies 12 Colwyn Bay Mermaids 28

(Sunday 27th January 2008)

Team-Lowri Thomas (Captain), Emma Roberts, Pamela Davies, Llinos Boulton, Delyth Oliver, Lowri Roberts, Emily Robinson, Laura Parry, Rhiannon Owen, Jess Davies, Heledd Bowen, Anna Winstone, Sophie Owen, Rosie Jones, Rhian Owen and Charlotte Goodwin.

Once again a friendly match was arranged between Bangor Junior Ladies and Colwyn Bay Mermaids to give all girls match experience and to give the Bangor girls a chance to proudly don their new shirts for the first time.

The two teams consisted of thirteen players a side with a mixture of age ranges and abilities. Colwyn Bay started strongly with Bangor taking a little time to settle in and this allowed CB to score two converted tries however Bangor showed their growing confidence and ability with a prolonged period of pressure towards the end of the first half. Some excellent tackling and good passing moves showed how the girls have improved since they last played.

The second half saw Bangor starting strongly and some good communication and support resulted in Emma Roberts scoring a very well deserved try under the posts. This was deftly converted by Anna Winstone. The Mermaids managed to score two more tries before Bangor again proved their ability and came close to scoring on a number of occasions but their determination paid off when Rhian Owen crossed for Bangor's second try.

Coaches Mez and Jane were impressed and proud of the girls performance. Although there is still a lot to learn and work on all the girls who played showed  tremendous determination, commitment and enthusiasm. It was particularly pleasing to see how well the more experienced players have improved but equally how some of the newer members of the squad (some very new) showed some excellent skills.

Once again thanks to Colwyn Bay Mermaids for their support and to all parents and fellow coaches for their touchline support!

JUNIORS GET NEW KIT FROM AGA

The Junior Ladies Section of Bangor Rugby Club received their first set of playing shirts sponsored by The AGA Shop Bangor.  Shop Manageress, Angela Williams, and colleague Vicky Batten were very happy to support a local sports organisation specifically aimed at young local girls.  Angela Williams also arranged for a skilled chef to put on a healthy spread for the girls after the presentation of the shirts.  It was greatly appreciated and enjoyed by all.  Senior player, Ffion Thomas thanked the new sponsors on behalf of the rest of squad and coaches Jane Winstone and Mez Peyrasse.  The shirts which will be shared by the U14 and U17 teams will boost the girl’s confidence when in match situations.  Both teams are looking forward to their first opportunity of wearing them.

 U14's North Wales Tournament

Once again Bangor Ladies were in action in Colwyn Bay in an U14s Tournament. Six girls played Lowri Thomas, Llinos Bolton, Delyth Oliver, Lowri Roberts, Laura Parry and Rhian Owen. Oswestry also had two U14 girls who joined us to make a team of eight.

The girls played three games against Colwyn Bay (Experienced and Beginners) and Nant Conwy.

The first match proved a real test against a very experienced Colwyn Bay opposition however the girls coped well and learned a lot from the experience.

The second game against Nant Conwy saw the girls getting themselves together and displaying some excellent moves that resulted in a number of tries and was a very closely contested game.

By game three against Colwyn Bay (Beginners) our girls had really clicked and showed some excellent skills which resulted in a very tight finish and some wonderful tries.

Coach Jane was very encouraged by the display of skills by all the players and has identified areas that need to be worked on.

Grateful thanks to all at Colwyn Bay for their hospitality and to Oswestry once again for their support.

It was great to have the support of the girls parents on the touchline and we look forward to their continued support as Bangor Ladies continue their development.

BANGOR TAKE ON COLWYN BAY (U14)

SUNDAY NOVEMBER 4th  2007

Bangor U14 Girls team invited Colwyn Bay U14 Mermaids for a friendly match on Sunday 4th November.  It was the home team’s first home match and as a developing team they needed to borrow two Mermaids to make up a 10 strong side. The girls put up a determined fight against the experienced visitors and despite conceding several tries they battled on with enthusiasm and successfully prevented more tries. The coaches were particularly pleased with the show of good communication skills, excellent tackling from all and good open play.  Stronger rucking and more aggressive play will be worked on in future training sessions. The team members were: Lowri Thomas (Captain), Llinos Bolton, Delyth Oliver, Laura Parry, Lowri Roberts, Emily Robinson, Rhiannon O’Marah and Jess Davies (debut appearance!)

U14's North Wales Tournament held in Colwyn Bay on Sunday 14th Oct 07.  We only had 5 players so we joined up with Oswestry who were in same situation.  We beat  Colwyn Bay Mermaids  4 tries to 1, and just lost against Nant Conwy 5 tries to 4. Players were  Lowri Thomas, Laura Parry, Delyth Oliver 2 tries, Lowri Roberts 4 tries, Llinos Bolton 1 try.
These were their first matches together and they displayed courage and determination.  Coaches Mez and Jane were very encouraged and hope to recruit more players and build a complete Under 14 girls team. Thanks to all the parents who supported the girls from the touch line.

Whilst the U 14's were playing the U 17 girls were invited along with Oswestrey U17's to train with Colwyn Bay Mermaids.  All the girls were made very welcome and participated fully in scrum/back training and went on to play a friendly game made up of players from each three clubs. A great time was had by all and the coaches plan to arrange further similar events for the benefit of  any teenage girls in North Wales interested in trying rugby.  And of course to have fun and make new friends as the phto shows!

NB A junior ladies Canadain team are touring Wales between 3rd - 14th April 2008 and I have invited them to play a friendly match on 5th or 6th April 2008 at Bangor.  This hasn't been cleared officially by the club yet but looks promising and the girls may require lodgings and socialising! ( I think our U17's are good at this bit in particular!!)  Mez, Coach.

Given the number of opportunities for the U14's to play other teams we really need to recruit as a
many young players as possible as soon as possible.  All current players need to bring new friends, peers, even young relatives to training on Sunday mornings.  Any one aged 11 - 19 is welcome.  No need to have played before.  No one will be made to tackle or do anything they don't feel ready to try.  Both coaches are quite friendly!

Most of the U17 girls also do fitness training (circuits) on Thursday nights (6 - 7pm) at the leisure centre on the David Hughes School site with an very experienced fitness instructor, Carrol.  All are welcome.
