BANGOR STEP UP

WRU DIVISION 2 NORTH
18th January 2020
BANGOR 43 – 17 LLANIDLOES

Bangor raised their league position to third from bottom with the double over Llanidloes at Cae Milltir with their third bonus point win of the season. The visitors took hold of the game early on putting the citizens on the defence and took the lead with a penalty from Adam Price. Bangor were determined to win this game and aided by three rapid penalty touch kicks got into a scoring position and Ossian Jones went over for a try converted by Harry Powell-Jones. The visitors missed a penalty chance but continued to show good form and regained the lead through a well worked try from Paul Jehu converted by Price. This didn’t last long as a determined Bangor went on the attack using the little possession they had and mauled their way over the try line for a 5 pointer from Allan Davies. Starting to get the upper hand in tussles for the ball Bangor went further ahead with a determined run from captain and centre Calvin Williams converted by Harry Powell-Jones. With both teams desperate to secure victory Llanidloes came back at the home side and were rewarded with a try from Gareth Anwyl converted by Price to bring the back to a two point deficit. This was to be the visitors last score as Bangor’s confidence grew and the visitors tired. Stefan Owen caught a clearance kick and wrong footed the defence with a lightening run for the try line for another converted try.

With a half time lead of 26 – 17 the second half started with a stalemate as neither team could get on top for a while but with the visitors visibly flagging Bangor took control with a second converted try from Calvin Williams and might have had one from front row Andy Baston but the referee judged it was held up over the line.  There was no doubt about the try from full back Harry Powell-Jones when he entered the back line to inject pace and scored a try that he also converted. Keeping up the attacks winger Dyfed Roberts went in for Bangor in the last minute for a five pointer.

Next Saturday Bangor are hopeful of continuing the improvement when they host Colwyn Bay at home.
