Bangor Just Lose Out

BANGOR 27 – 31 NANT CONWY 2nds

The Citizens let another game slip through their fingers but were rewarded with 2 losing bonus points in an exciting game. Bangor took the lead with a try started and finished by Cameron Owen who ran from deep and got on to the final pass after the ball was recycled. Tom Belt added the conversion. Giving away too many penalties affected Bangor throughout the game and one of these let the visitors get close to the try line. Scrum half Elis Fon got through for an unconverted try. It didn’t take long for Bangor to score again with running rugby that saw the ball go to winger Ruben Smith to touch down for an unconverted try. Another penalty again gave Nant an attacking position and this time 2nd row forward Robat Lewis forced his way over in the corner for 5 points. Bangor again ran the ball from a scrum and it went all the way along the back line to Gwyn Roberts who made good ground to touch down in the corner. Nant struck back yet again taking advantage of a penalty touch kick to set up wing forward Gruff Fon and this time centre Gwion Elis Jones was successful with his conversion to level the score. Bangor regained the lead with a Tom Belt penalty just before half time.

The Citizens were put on the defence for a long time after the restart unable to get out of their half and Nant were very clever at ripping the ball from them when they tried to run it out. Eventually the pressure told and a line out maul saw Gruff Fon go over for a converted try. Bangor’s fighting spirit showed through and they got going storming down to the try line where a series of pick and go literally got the ball to inches of the try line but Nant’s dogged defence kept them out and eventually cleared the ball down field. In desperation Bangor tried to run the ball from their line but lost it under the posts giving away a simple try to Ellis Fon that seemed to settle the result with a 7 pointer. Bangor might have given up at this point but they came back again and got a 5 m scrum and pushed their way over the line for No.8 Gruff Tudur to touch down for a 7 pointer.  With time and daylight running out Bangor might have won at the end with last minute penalty kick to the corner but nant again stripped them of the ball and kicked it dead to end the match.
