YOUTH TRIUMPH AT CAERNARFON

SATURDAY NOV 3rd

North Wales Youth League

Caernarfon 19 – Bangor 24

With one point separating Caernarfon and Bangor in the league this was a game both sides were keen to win. In a fierce wind, which was behind Bangor in the first half, much of the opening exchanges were well inside the Caernarfon half with Bangor eventually crossing the try line, with a good passage of play ending with debutant centre Roland Finnie scoring the first try.

Bangor forwards were soon camped on the Caernarfon try line again, with strong defence from Caernarfon holding firm until Ethan Jones powered his way over with much to do to secure the grounding for Bangor's second try underneath the posts. The conversion was successful.

A third try for Bangor, finished off this time by fly-half Harri Jones gave Bangor a healthy lead as the game approached the half-way mark. However, Caernarfon finished the first half very strongly, scoring two quick tries, both expertly converted despite the wind, to make it 14-17 at half time.

The second half was fiercely contested with Caernarfon choosing to keep the ball much tighter with the forwards making good ground but when it seemed the inevitable try was coming Bangor's defence held firm. Having repelled attack after attack Bangor then found themselves in a good attacking position and fly-half Harri Jones again burst through the Caernarfon defence to score Bangor's fourth try. The conversion made it 14-24 to Bangor and from that point it seemed the win was secured.

Caernarfon scored a late try to bring the score back to 19-24, securing a losing bonus point, but Bangor held out for the last few minutes to secure the win.

The game was a credit to both sides, fiercely fought in poor conditions. Tempers flared at times but this was a reflection of how much both sides wanted the win. As usual all players exchanged handshakes at the end and left their rivalries on the pitch.

Bangor now have two remaining league fixtures against Bethesda (home) and Dolgellau (away) before a National Quarter Final game against Nelson from South Wales at home at Cae Milltir on the 1st December.
