BANGOR ARE IN GREEN AND WHITE SHIRTS
SEASON 2006 - 07
The Team that played the last game of the season
SATURDAY MAY 5th
Asda League Division 5 North
BRO FFESTINIOG 55 - BANGOR 7
Played on a pitch resembling a golf bunker with uncontested scrums Bangor were well beaten by 9 tries to 1. Bangor were just about on top for the first ten minutes thanks to several penalties in their favour and then Bro discovered Bangor were reluctant to tackle or even make body contact in the back division and they ran in two tries in quick succession followed by a steady stream of scores throughout the rest of the game. Bangor did have a good share of the ball from the pack who did well in the line outs and rucks. Their only try came from centre Iwan Jones with a good chip overhead and chase to the line. Captain Mathew Baston converted. Bangor often resulted to kicking but too often the ball went straight to the opposition who ran it back at them and broke the defence all too easily. Bangor stemmed the flow of tries to 4 in the second half mainly due to some great work by forwards Kevin Roberts, Mark Pritchard and Ruben Owen who put themselves around the field chasing down their opponents. The team ended the season in good spirit despite the heavy loss and must be congratulated in seeing the club through another difficult season.

WELSHPOOL 45 - BANGOR 8
On a scorching April afternoon Bangor travelled to Mid Wales and were outscored seven tries to one by the men from Powys. Trailing by 26 - 8 at the interval it did not look a forlorn conclusion as there were several positives in their game. Matthew Baston did touch down only for the try to be disallowed for a previous offence. Their much deserved try, from close range, coming from Mark Pritchard back in the side after a long absence through injury. Baston, the captain, added 3 points from a well struck penalty just before half time. The far more experienced Powys outfit were however dominant in the second period and added a further 3 good tries, a couple from long range to end their season on a high. Welshpool's scorers were Mark Williams (2) Tim Sherratt (2) Alan Williams , Rees Roberts & Tom Worthy.
SATURDAY APRIL 21st
Asda League Division 5 North
BANGOR 21 - RHOSLLANERCHRUGOG 19

Bangor last won a league match in March 2005 so this win has been a long time coming. In the end the difference was only one two point conversion but what an important two points it was. Rhos had a heavy pack of forwards and with the wind at their backs they kept Bangor under the cosh for the first 25 minutes trying to steam roll their way over the try line but Bangor held out and then turned the tide. With some ball coming their way they pushed play into the visitor half and were awarded a penalty. Captain Mathew Baston took a quick tap and went in for a try that he converted to give to home side a 7 - 0 lead. Not to be outdone Rhos turned a tap penalty into a rolling maul and powered their way over for an unconverted try awarded to Dafydd Rowland. The game was held up for a while when Bangor's veteran full back Bleddyn Butt sustained a severe knee injury and had to go to hospital. This put a dampener on proceedings for the remainder of the first half.
Bangor started the second half in a winning mood and although their scrums were being decimated by the visitors they put up a strong defence with outside half Dafydd Roberts upending opponents twice his size and the flankers stopped any sniping around the scrum from Rhos' back row. Bangor increased their lead with a great try from inside centre Tom Bradfield who chipped over the defence and was first to drop on the ball. Baston's conversion gave Bangor a comfortable lead but when Bangor let Kelvin Brian waltz through the centre without laying a finger on him followed by a successful conversion from Simon Hughes, Rhos were right back in the game. Although still receiving a battering in the scrums, Bangor's forwards Gruff Tudor and Kevin Roberts were actively disrupting their play and so Bangor were able to get some ball to the back division and centre Gethin Jones showed some pace powering through for Bangor's third try. Baston's conversion proved to be vital as the last period saw Rhos get a second wind and end the game as they started with some enormous rolling mauls and this time No.8 Carl Zolman got down the blind side for a try and with the conversion from Hughes the deficit was only two points. With seconds left and despite a bit of panic in the ranks, Bangor finally got the ball off the opponents and into touch and the final whistle signalled a historic victory.

MACHYNLLETH 30 - BANGOR 3
Despite being outscored by 6 tries to nil there were lots of positives to come out of this game. In fact Bangor dominated for long periods in the scorching heat and were unlucky not to have more points on the board. The main difference being Mach's live wire flanker who was instrumental in his side's success, he was everywhere throughout the game and scored two fine tries. Bangor's sole consolation was a superbly struck penalty from 10 yards inside the home side's half by captain Matthew Baston playing at stand-off. With a respectable scoreline of 10- 3 at the interval hopes were high of a possible upset, but it was not to be. A few unfortunate missed tackles saw the home side scoring three gifted tries in succession to end all hopes. Bangor were however gallant to the end and never stopped trying with Gareth Roberts playing a stormer at prop and made several barn storming runs cutting through the home side's defence on several occasions. The teams were exhausted by the end as the temperature rose to an unusual high level for the time of the year and both sides were glad to hear the final whistle.

C.O.B.R.A. 73 - BANGOR 7
It would be inappropriate to criticise the 14 mainly young players who made the journey to mid Wales on this bank holiday weekend to fulfil their league fixture. With last minute withdrawals and genuine reasons for not playing there was little sign of the team that played so well at home the previous week. Bangor were always onto a hiding for nothing but they gave a good account of themselves. Captain Mathew Baston had to go to the outside half position and Meirion Owen took over at scrum half. In the first half they dominated the line outs and restricted the home team to four tries. When COBRA made some changes to their line up Bangor found they had to defend constantly and the tries flowed freely. The pitch was hard and Bangor found kicking deep was the best form of attack and this led to their only try in the second half when full back Guto Williams put in a long kick that stayed in field at the corner and after some scrambling around winger Gavin Hughes got the touch down and Mathew Baston converted.

BANGOR 10 - RHAYADER 14
Fielding the 'A' team almost produced a shock win for Bangor who led until 3 minutes from the end. What a turn around from last week's performance with players confounding supporters and critics alike with a performance that if repeated regularly would probably put them somewhere in the middle of the league instead of at the bottom. Bangor's forwards were transformed by Gruff Tudur and Kevin Roberts playing in their best position and were on top from the start getting good ball from lineout and scrums and ensuring good ball retention by clearing out the opposition in the loose. Ten minutes into the game the visitors struck against the run of play with their first real attack finding left wing Haydon O'Reilly on the overlap to touch down in the corner followed by a superb conversion by Dylan Jones. Bangor levelled the score with a try from scrum half Mathew Baston who caught the visitors on the hop when they assumed he was going to take a penalty kick at goal but instead he tapped the ball and ran it in for a try that he then converted. Both sides missed a couple of penalty attempts but it was Bangor who kept up the pressure with some storming runs from centre Dafydd Mali superbly supported by outside half Dafydd Roberts making a rare appearance and co-centre Toby Lindley making a return to the ranks after a long absence. Bangor took the lead with a Baston penalty but really should have been well ahead having just failed to score on several occasions. The first half ended with the visitors putting Bangor under pressure but the home team were determined not to cave in and held on to the break.
The visitors started the second period determined to get on top and put it some strong rolling mauls and attempted push over tries but Bangor managed to stay firm and cool headed to clear their line. Good tackling prevented any back play progressing to the wings. Bangor missed two kickable penalties that would have sealed the game and then three minutes from the end Rhayader broke out of defence with a 70 metre sprint down the touchline from right wing Chris Bennet to score under the posts making the conversion easy for Dylan Jones.

BANGOR DEVELOPMENT TEAM 0 - COLEG NORMAL 0
Bangor gave their youths a run out with some of the older players and slogged out a nil - nil draw in pouring rain. Tackling was fierce from both sides and despite several breakouts by both teams the defence always managed to pull them back. Bangor had territorial advantage in the second half and came close to mauling their way over but the students were never going to give in.
SATURDAY FEBRUARY 17th
Asda League Division 5 North
BANGOR 7 - DOLGELLAU 58
Considering that the visitors are a much improved side, this was a great improvement over the 88 - 0 away defeat earlier in the season. Bangor were decimated by a flue epidemic and the game had to be played with uncontested scrums. Captain Mathew Baston had to take the outside half position and Kevin Roberts played out of position at centre where he put up a strong defence. Bangor welcomed the return of local lad and former youth player John Rolling on the wing who put in a good performance. Although the visitors struck with a first minute try, Bangor put up a stubborn defence for the next 30 minutes before they let them in for their second. At one time Bangor were down to 13 players following a yellow card and a blood injury. The same player was later hospitalised with a cut face following an off the ball incident that the referee did not see and Bangor played much of the second half with fourteen players. The visitors never found the going as easy as the scoreline suggests with some keen tackling from back row forwards Ruben Elliot and Mark Pritchard. Although on the defence through most of the game, Bangor did manage to cause trouble and were awarded a penalty try when centre Dafydd Mali was tripped chasing for a touch down. Incredibly, the referee did not produce a yellow card that is mandatory when a penalty try is awarded. Mathew Baston converted the try.

SATURDAY FEBRUARY 3rd
Asda League Division 5 North
RHYL 31 - BANGOR 3
The strength of last weeks squad had dissipated during the week and a bare 15 loyal players made the trip to Rhyl. The score looked very respectable at half time with only a single try being scored by the home side against a gutsy Bangor fifteen. Quite often they had to defend like demons but they were up to the task and were in fact quite a handful in attack as well with some powerful runs through the middle from Kevin Roberts and the ever alert Dafydd Mali making life difficult for the home side. It was only lack of vital support at crucial moments that prevented a well deserved score .
The second half was however extremely frustrating when indiscipline proved most costly for the visitors. They had two men sin binned in quick succession and during this period the hosts rattled up 19 points through 3 tries and 2 conversions. Although they did leak one further converted try when the game was already lost, spirit was still high and they rallied right through to the end and were unfortunate not to add nothing more than a sole Matthew Baston penalty to their tally. It was good to see captain Matthew Baston back in action after a long injury and the influential skipper, superbly supported by workhorse Sean Kelly will take some heart that once back to full strength that they will get that elusive win.
SATURDAY JANUARY 27th
Asda League Division 5 North
BANGOR 0 - WELSHPOOL 8
Coach Roger Walker had the luxury of a full squad to select from and fielded players in their correct position for a change to produce the strongest side this season. Captain Mathew Baston made a welcome return from injury with a second half appearance.
The game was a battle between Bangor's youthful side and Welshpool's veterans. Bangor had most of the territorial advantage in the first half but again could not convert pressure into points. Bangor had good linout possession thanks to the accurate throwing of youth team hooker Wil Withey and set up several good rolling mauls but could not get the ball over the try line. Welshpool scored through an Andrew Thomas penalty on their first visit to the Bangor end but good tackling by Bangor's back row kept them from adding any more in the first half.
The veterans of Welshpool got the upper hand in the second half and possession swung their way. An injury to Ruben Elliot and Wil Withey did not help but Prop Gareth Roberts led some strong charges from defence and Bangor did well to keep them out for a long period. The impasse was broke when the visitors moved the ball to the blind side from a scrum and winger Tim Sharatt crossed in the corner. Bangor came back strong towards the end with Baston setting up some attacks but they were well pleased with their performance and will go to Rhyl next week with some confidence.

SATURDAY JANUARY 20th
Asda League Division 5 North
LLANIDLOES 66 - BANGOR 0
League leaders Llanidloes comfortably saw off a depleted Bangor outfit on a wet and stormy afternoon. With late withdrawals, injuries and an unfortunate bereavement it meant Bangor had to travel into the heart of Powys with only fourteen men. Deepest condolences were passed on to acting captain Sean Kelly whose father sadly died this week.
Missing six of the players who performed so well last week against Bro Ffestiniog it was never going to be easy against such a formidable opposition, and with one man short it was a mammoth task right from the kick-off. Captain of the day, Mark Pritchard, rallied his troops tirelessly throughout and was superbly supported by Gareth Roberts who also had a storming game. Trailing by 29-0 at the interval through 5 tries & 2 conversions, it was almost respectable under the circumstances considering that points were conceded very late in the long first half with eight minutes of injury time being played.
A further 5 tries were scored by the hosts in the second half, again 2 of them well into injury time which again was hard to understand as there was hardly any stoppages. Both sides had a man sin binned which meant Bangor at one stage were down to 13 men, but during this period the home side only scored 5 points. At some stage in both halves the Bangor pack showed true grit and determination and in fact dominated for about 10 minutes on both occasions without picking up some well deserved points.
Next Saturday Bangor play hosts to Welshpool at Cae Milltir - Kick-off 2.30pm
SATURDAY JANUARY 13th
Asda League Division 5 North
BANGOR 11 - BRO FFESTINIOG 23
This Bangor team looked and played better than anything seen at Cae Milltir for a long time. Although Captain Mathew Baston is still on the injured list, new, old and young faces combined to give the clubs dwindling supporters some hope for a change in the clubs fortunes. The tackling was vastly improved and they played with the spirit of a team that really wanted to win. The only thing missing was the ability to turn pressure into points.
The game was played in a howling gale and with this in their favour Bangor needed to rack up a good score in the first half but failed to do so. Although they occupied the visitors 22 metre area for a long time they only came away with six points from two Irfon Williams penalties. Williams also came close to scoring a try just lacking one support player for the final pass.
The second half started predictably with Bro using the wind to pen Bangor into their 22 metre area and using their heavy pack to bulldoze their way over the line for a try with veteran Hayden Williams getting the credit. Bangor resisted further attempts well and despite the size of the visitors, Bangor knew how to bring them down and so Bro had to take the penalty on offer to gain a single point lead from the boot of Barry Roberts. Bangor made some changes after losing their new centre to Hospital with a cut head. They moved acting captain Sean Kelly to scrum half and brought on Daffydd Mali at centre. He immediately showed what might have been done in the first half bursting through the defence and making a lot of ground. Soon after Bangor hacked out of defence into the teeth of the gale and were quick with the chase resulting in substitute hooker Kevin Roberts getting the touch down to Bring Bangor back on level terms.
While Bangor were still celebrating their success grouped in the middle of the pitch Bro took them by surprise with a quick kick off into the corner which should have been defended. This put the home side straight back under the cosh and Bro eventually bulldozed over for another try from Mathew Jones. Bangor never recovered and when Bro got another try through Barry Roberts at the final whistle the score line looked a lot better than it might have.

BANGOR 0 - MACHYNLLETH 61
Bangor had several good scoring chances with Dafydd Mali coming close with a strong run from centre and Irfon Williams twice got to the try line from the outside half position. Bangor seem to meet a glass wall whenever they reach the try line and cannot finish the job. Had they got some points the defence might have been more resolute. Kevin Roberts gave Bangor plenty of linout ball and youth player Ruben Elliot made an impression but despite this Bangor leaked 9 tries in all, most of them through missed tackles in the back division and lack of defensive cover. With eight conversions, the score line soared to 61.

SATURDAY DECEMBER 9th
Asda League Division 5 North
BANGOR 5 - COBRA 40
Despite the score line this game gave some hope for a Bangor recovery. With captain Mathew Baston still injured Sean Kelly took over at scrum half. A few old heads like Aled Hughes and Irfon Williams mixed with Bangor's best youth team prospects to show some real backbone and fighting spirit that has been missing of late. Bangor had a large share of territorial advantage and ball possession but didn't turn pressure into points. The home side got off to a bad start failing to get their hands on the ball for the first ten minutes and Cobras large No.8 forward made two simple tries first with a quick tap and go penalty and then picking up at the base of the scrum. Bangor then started to compete and Dafydd Mali returning from injury at centre broke the visitors defence with a fine run and although stopped short of the line Bangor managed to get the ball moving to Gavin Hughes for a try in the corner. Cobra scored again from a rolling maul outweighing Bangor's young lightweight forwards. Their weight in the pack combined with a mix up at the back of a Bangor scrum gave them another try just before half time.
Bangor put up some real fighting spirit in the second half and their young mobile forward Ruben Elliot stood out as a great prospect. It took 20 minutes before Cobra scored again getting two tries in quick succession but Bangor dominated the final period and occupied the visitors 22m area. With no goal kicker Bangor turned down several kickable penalties to go for the try but could not cross the try line.

RHYADER 27 - BANGOR 3
Depleted of several regulars through late withdrawals and other various reasons Bangor travelled to Rhayader on the banks of the river Wye in Radnorshire with only 13 men , but came away with a creditable result under the circumstances .They fielded six regular youth players who all performed admirably and every one of them has a bright future at the club for many years to come.
After conceding two early tries Bangor more than held their own as they wisely played a tight game holding on to possession for as long as possible but due to lack of numbers anything creative was often met with a stumbling block because of the two man advantage by the opposition. They did however score from a well struck penalty from number 8 Sean Kelly , who was also skipper on the day deputising for the injured Matthew Baston , before leaking one more try to trail 15-3 at the interval .
The visitors started the second period badly conceding two quick tries, one of which was converted , but the evergreen Kelly, Bangor's man of the match, rallied his troops tirelessly and for the remainder of the game they controlled proceedings without adding to their tally despite several superb efforts .
Guto Roberts was rock solid in defence and young rookie Will Withey at hooker provided a constant flow of accurate throws to his jumpers thus giving his side a solid platform to hang on to possession for long periods . With equal head-count it may well have been a different result.
Next Saturday Bangor welcome league newcomers COBRA from Llanfaircaereinion in Powys to Cae Milltir .Kick off 2.30pm
SATURDAY OCTOBER 7th
BANGOR 5 - RHYL 27
Asda League Division 5 North
Both teams had an equal number of scoring chances, the difference being that Rhyl took theirs but luckless Bangor could not quite finish theirs. Bangor must have had the territorial advantage throughout thanks to some strong forward drives from youth team forwards Gareth Roberts, recently converted to play at prop, Gruff Tudur and old hand Dylan Roberts at hooker. Bangor had an early chance to score when winger Gavin Hughes, making his first appearance this season, was tackled into touch at the corner flag. Soon after Bangor looked to have scored when Mathew Baston put in a cross kick to the far corner that was cleanly caught by Kevin Roberts playing on the other wing but he lost control of the ball as he touched it down. Iwan Jones narrowly missed a penalty soon after and it was clear that lady luck was not with Bangor. Against the run of play and aided by penalty kicks, Rhyl found some territory to occupy and after Mark Pritchard was yellow carded they scored under the posts with an easy conversion. Restarting with a kick off into the strong wind, Bangor took possession and threw the ball into the backs where it bounced off a head onto the floor and up into the arms of an advancing Rhyl player who went over for another try. Bangor had another astonishing bit of bad luck before half time when Rhyl lost the ball over their own try line under pressure from Centre Irfon Williams who appeared to drop on it for a try but the referee spotted the smallest knock on and gave a scrum. The half time line line was 0 - 12.
Bangor were up against it in the second half playing into the wind and Rhyl soon exposed their weakness and found a huge overlap and a missing defence to score in the corner. Showing great resilience the Bangor pack made a great drive up field ending with Mathew Baston being bundled into the corner flag. The following line out became a messy ruck and Mark Pritchard forced his way over for a very deserved try to put Bangor on the score board. Then Bangor seemed to crumble and run out of steam. Rhyl ran in two quick tries helped by missed tackles and slow cover defence. Just when it seemed that Bangor were throwing in the towel they found the will and energy to get on top again and spent the last 15 minutes occupying Rhyl's 22 m area. Rhyl gave away penalty after penalty but Bangor decided to tap and run each time and first Gareth Roberts was held up over the line and then Sean Kelly just lost the ball as he force it over the line. Bangor can only hope that they will continue to improve and that they are due a lot of luck sometime.
Next week Bangor travel to Dolgellau for another tough encounter.
Gavin Hughes nearly get in at the corner
SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 16th
BANGOR 3 - LLANIDLOES 93
Bangor were very disapointed at this heavy defeat in their first league fixture of the season. Although conceding points Bangor did compete in the early stages and had territorial advantage for the first 20 minutes but only had a penalty from Iwan Jones to show for their efforts. Every mistake from Bangor was punished with a try and the defence virtually gave up in the second half allowing the visitors to run in ten more tries. Dafydd Mali showed some grit first in the centre and then in the front row. Sean Kelly moved to scrum half when Mathew Baston retired injured and created some opportunities pouncing on the loose ball but as with all of Bangor's efforts, there was no quick support and no second phase possession so players ended up being penalised for holding on to the ball.

SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 9th
BANGOR 0 - CAMBRIAN WELFARE 106
Despite fielding a full squad Bangor were totally outclassed by the speed of the visitors from the Rhondda Valley in this first competitive match of the season. The visitors crossed the try line 8 times in the first half and 9 times in the second half. Bangor had very little ball possession and attacks from the home side were few and mainly from scrum half Mathew Baston. Next week Bangor have a home league match against Llanidloes.
This was as close as Bangor came to scoring
