Under 11 ROUND ROBIN

Bangor, Nant Conwy and Ruthun u11s took part in a round-robin at Bangor this morning. Ruthun were disadvantaged through being three players down, although Nant and Bangor lent players to make them up to the required 10.

Sympathetic refereeing in the very blustery conditions ensured that the games flowed with a minimum of stoppage time.

In the first game, Nant stole victory from Bangor with a last minute try by their scrum half after an exciting second half. The final score was Bangor 14 - 19 Nant.

Ruthun never gave up in their game against Nant and, although Nant emerged 42 - 0 winners, Ruthun were unlucky not to cross the line on a number of occasions.

The score in the final game, between Bangor and Ruthun, did not reflect Ruthun's promising start. The Ruthun players did not allow their heads to drop and, although losing 35 - 0, they kept going to the final whistle.

Nant 33 - 5 Bangor

Well “you can’t win them all“, as they say. Quite a challenge was to be had all through the game. Nant proving to be a tough team. Bangor trying hard but not quite fast enough to catch the 3 tries scored in the first half by Nant. All tries were converted allowing Nant to end the first half with a healthy lead of 21-0. The second half also challenging for the Bangor boys. A try soon after the second half began scored by our faithful try scorer Thomas Yardley kept their spirits up although no conversion was scored. Bangor continued to battle on but could not keep up with Nant’s pace of play and allowed Nant to score another 2 tries and 2 conversions.

The match ending with a win for Nant of 33-5. Come on Bangor Boys, keep up your good team spirit.

Sunday 23rd November 2008

Bangor 28 – Nant Conwy 26

After last week’s victory in Pwllheli Bangor were playing at home this week against Nant Conwy. The game started well for the visitors who imposed their fast running, quick passing style in an impressive display of attacking rugby and they were rewarded with an early try. Bangor reacted and reorganised themselves and soon were on the offensive with several strong forward moves. From then on the game was even with both teams scoring 4 tries but Nant Conwy failing to convert one of them by hitting the post: a very close victory for Bangor!

The Bangor forwards (Elin Thompson, Kai Williams, James Hughes, Haf Jones) had the better of their opponents in many rucks and mauls, winning their fair share of balls and therefore preventing Nant Conwy from developing their game. Harry Songhurst and Guillaume Peyrasse took advantage of their forwards’ work and managed to probe the defence in midfield with some successes. At the back Jake Davies, Stephan Owen and Douglas Seale had their defensive skills tested to the limit by Nant Conwy’s attacks but they coped well and were in turn very active in carrying the ball forward. At the end, the 100% conversion rate from Stephan proved to be decisive.

It was a good team performance in a very open game. Nant Conwy players have to be congratulated for their good spirit and fair play.

Sunday 16th November.

Pwllheli: 15 - Bangor: 20

Bangor could only field 8 players but started the game with a high tempo which took Pwllheli by surprise. The forwards controlled the ball in the rucks and the mauls allowing the backs to play wide and fast. Bangor scored 4 tries during the first 10 minutes before Pwllheli could react. But the reaction came and Bangor had to defend hard to reach half-time without conceding any points. In the second half, helped by the introduction of fresh players Pwllheli piled on the pressure on a tiring but battling Bangor side and managed to score 3 tries. Still leading 20 – 15, Bangor fronted a stubborn defence and resisted a spirited Pwllheli team, defending on their try line for long periods of time. The game became fiercely contested but Bangor found the energy to take the game into Pwllheli’s half, refusing to concede any territory and even came very close to scoring more tries.

Bangor’s coaches and supporters were pleased with the team’s fighting spirit and by the technical display of all the players. The team has a very positive attitude with all the players working hard and supporting each other.

Elin Thompson was pivotal in her roles in the scrum and line out and often led an aggressive defence in open play. Her support in rucks and mauls was as always exemplary and she contributed greatly to the attack with her forward charges. Kai Williams was a constant threat for the opposition with his powerful and spectacular runs through defences but still worked tirelessly for the team in winning and keeping the ball. Haf Jones had another very good game, securing the ball in the line out and at the scrum. Always at the centre of the contests, she had a huge role in stabilising rucks and mauls and winning the ball for the team. James Hughes was prominent ball in hand, moving the game forward thanks to his runs. He was also at the heart of the defence, injuring himself in a try saving tackle. Harry Songhurst had a very busy day and showed an always increasing array of skills: Distributing the ball, defending, wrong footing the defence, throwing dummies, displaying a mature understanding of the game. Guillaume Peyrasse was tireless in organising the defence and launching attacks for the backs. He was always threatening with his trademark runs which the defence struggle to stop. Jake Davies was at the centre of most actions. In attack, he displayed skills, speed and a good reading of the game. In defence he was as always uncompromising, leading by example when the game became fierce. Stephan Owen secured the wings, covering the width of the pitch, supporting his team mates and tackling tirelessly all ball carriers. He often saved the team from dangerous Pwllheli’s overlap while his speed and attacking skills kept the opposition under pressure.

Under 10’s MINI'S tournament at mold

 Sunday 19th October

CLICK ON PICTURE TO SEE FULL SIZE

Well who needs to watch International matches when you can take a trip to Mold and watch the Bangor U10’s play, like they played during this tournament??!!

The team was placed in Pool group B. Their opponents for the tournament were Mold, Caldy, Llandudno and Helsby.

First match to be played was against Mold, this proved to be a fast and physical game from the very start. Bangor making a good start to the game, defending well and demonstrating some excellent tackling skills, with all players trying so hard. Unfortunately could not quite manage to keep Mold from scoring the first Try in the first half. The second half, again, with hard, fast tackling, saw Bangor up their pace allowing a great try from Thomas Yardley to end the match, closing the score 3-3. A great start to the tournament.

Bangor V Caldy was the second match to be played. Bangor with good team spirits and all players playing extremely well, took the lead in the first half when Sam Goodwin very determined battled through and scored a great try - another one to add to his collection this season, well done Sam.

Second half continued well, Bangor keeping their tackling and driving skills up, became all too much for Caldy to handle, when Philip Smith landed a great try ending in a 6-0 win for the Bangor boys. Excellent team spirit and a great match.

Third match played Bangor V Landudno. Bangor enjoying every minute of the tournament got stuck into the match and again showed great rugby skills, especially Philip Smith when he scored the one and only try of the match, well done Philip, another try to add to your scoreboard!!!

Bangor continued to hold their own and keep Llandudno from damaging the scores with a win of 3-0 for Bangor, this win putting them through to the semi finals. Fantastic Boys!!

Well done boys you deserved to go through to the semi finals, excellent rugby.

Last match of the pool, Bangor V Helsby. The U9’s took the pitch for this game with a few U10’s to make a full team.

Another great match played, Bangor not phased at all playing older boys. Bangor displayed some great rugby skills and determination especially from Billy Songhurst who flew down the pitch, to be tackled inches away from the try line – ‘what a great attempt’. Alex also showed great determination during his match despite being tackled from bigger players, well done Alex. Unfortunately Helsby were the stronger side and managed to win, only by 1 try to nil, well done the U9’s a great match.

Semi finals here we come!!!

Bangor V Ellesmere Port

Not having played Ellesmere Port during the tournament, Bangor were not aware of how strong a team they were. Both teams were playing well and obviously both wanting to be in the finals, this match was a tough one !! Ellesmere Port scoring the first try of the game followed shortly by a try scored for Bangor, by yet again Thomas Yardley, well done Thomas. Second half of the game and the heat was on for both sides. Bangor constantly keeping focused despite some nasty bumps and bangs could not keep out another try being scored by Ellesmere Port ending the match with a 6-3 win to Ellesmere Port.

Ellesmere Port went through to the finals to play Mold and won the tournament.

Bangor Coaches and spectators were all very proud of the boys as they really did play their hearts out and could not have tried any harder.

Congratulations Boys, what an excellent tournament.

What a great day it was, not only did the sun shine, the team was in good spirit and ready for a challenge. The convoy left Bangor and headed to Ruthin rugby club to play both Ruthin and Llandudno under 10’s team.

First match played – Bangor vs Ruthin

Having all watched Ruthin vs Llandudno the boys could not wait to get on the pitch. Ruthin being a strong team the boys had to play hard and well, which is what they started to do. All players were in good spirit on the field and played with good team tactics. The first half of the game saw both teams defending well, especially Ruthin as Bangor were predominantly in their half. Before Bangor ended the first half, Mathew J Morris scored a great try with Thomas Yardley scoring the conversion.

The second half continuing well with Bangor still trying hard saw Ruthin score a try and conversion this allowing both teams to draw at this stage of the match.

The match came to an end with neither team scoring further, this resulting in a score draw of 7-7.

Brilliant Boys – well done!!!!!

Second match – Bangor vs Llandudno.

Bangor having warmed up nicely after their first match soon began to dominate the field. With all players trying extremely hard they demonstrated some excellent tackling skills and began to up the pace, when determined Sam Goodwin scored 3 tries virtually one after the other, 1 try was converted by Mathew G Morris. Luke Jones also scored a try with Nick Dundee scoring the conversion. Although not kicking quite high enough this did not affect Bangor’s scores when Will scored another try before the end of the first half.

The second half continued to go well although Llandudno did manage to score a try and conversion. The end of the match was insight and before the Bangor Boys finished Philip Smith managed to score their final try of the Game, ending the match with a win for Bangor of 34-7. What a great game!!!!!

BANGOR v LLANGEFNI

UNDER 14 SEPTEMBER 21st 2008

BANGOR 33 - LLANGEFNI 34

The lead changed hands with almost every score and the result was made on the last act of the game when Llangefni converted their final try. Most of the tries for Llangefni were scored by their big No.8 hanging about on the wing to be fed the ball. A great advert for junior rugby - well played every one.
