Wingers raise £500 for Anglesey-based kids charity CLIC Sargent
North Wales Wings held a camping weekend (known in the club as a "Wing Ding)" from 22nd-25th June 2006 at Bangor Rugby Club. The weekend was attended by 140 bikes and their owners from all over the UK, Ireland and even as far as Poland.
During the weekend, £500 was raised through raffles and donations for the local Anglesey-based children's charity "CLIC Sargent". Bangor Rugby Club, during its quiet Summer season, was also very pleased to generate some welcome extra revenue from the friendly bikers by means of the meals provided and - of course - the bar!
Mrs Janet Turvey, Treasurer of North Wales Wings, is pictured presenting a cheque fo £500 to Alan Davies the President of the Rugby Club for the club to pass on to CLIC Sargent charity.
A "Wing Ding" is GoldWing-speak for a regional event to which all GoldWing riders are invited. From Easter to the end of October, Wing Dings are held most weekends up and down the country and generally take the form of a camping event, usually with hotel and caravan accommodation available nearby. The region hosting the event will lay on entertainment, organise runs to places of interest and award various trophies throughout the event.
The Honda GoldWing is a large capacity touring motorcycle introduced in 1975 with a 1000cc engine. It has grown over the last 31 years to its present 1800cc at a cost of £17,000. Owners of the "Wings" will spend much more on customising their machines with chrome and lights - some even towing trailers.
North Wales Wings is one of the 37 regions which make up GWOCGB (GoldWing Owners Club of Great Britain), the latter having around 2,000 members in total.
CLIC Sargent (Caring for Children with Cancer) is a charity which offers practical help to the children and their families by providing much needed help on a day to day basis. Services range from places to stay when a child is being treated at a distant unit to special grants in times of financial worries, which this illness can so often bring. The late great motorcycle legend Barry Sheene was a strong supporter of the charity.
Bangor Rugby Club was formed 130 years ago, in 1876. The club in Llandegai has now hosted two Wing Dings for North Wales Wings and the next event is being planned for 2007.
JULY 9th to 11th 2004
Readers in the Bangor area might have noticed some classical motor bikes touring the area over the weekend. The North Wales Wings commonly known as the WINGDINGERS hosted a weekend rally for bikers from all over the UK, Ireland and the continent. Proud owners of all ages gathered at Bangor Rugby Club in Llandygai to parade their magnificent machines. They set up camp on the Cae Millter site producing a bright scene with their individual club banners and national flags fluttering over the camp. Bikers and their families enjoyed the benefits of the rugby club house being able to wash and shower in the club and then chat over a pint and meal while watching recordings of past events on the large screen in the club house.
