BANGOR YOUTH 2011 - 12

NEWTOWN 3 - 17 BANGOR
After many cancellations from other clubs Bangor Youth finally got a game away to Newtown. A good squad of players turned up for the trip and they were all needed for this win. Newtown had an impressive looking squad of 21 players available and gave a good account of themselves. A physical battle with neither pack taking a step back turned the 1st half into a hard contest with Newtown just feeding off Bangor knock-ons to gain territory. Bangor always looked better with ball going through hands and this eventually paid off with scrum half Rhys Jones sneaking over for the 1st try which went unconverted. Newtown struck back almost immediately with a penalty leaving the Half time score at 5 - 3 to Bangor. After a brief discussion at half time Bangor played a much better game constantly pressurising any Newtown ball and playing the game wider and this pressure resulted in a try for Declan Jones which Alex Griffiths duly converted. 12 - 3 to Bangor. With Newtown getting frustrated and Bangor players sensing the win it was only a matter of time before the next score and this try came from Captain Rhun Morris making it 17 - 3 to Bangor. The game was a physical encounter and both teams contributed to a good game which was played in good spirit with lots of banter on and off the field. An extra thank you to Rhun Morris and Gwion Williams who revised for their exams on the coach rather than miss this game as without them this win would have been much more difficult without their experience
NORTH WALES YOUTH CUP
BANGOR 27 - 7 RHYL
Bangor produced a stunning result overcoming their visitors from a division 1 with an energetic and spirited performance. Right from the kick off Bangor unsettled the visitors taking the ball and mounting an assault on the try line. Good defence kept them out and it took time to get a reward with a try from Rhys Williams. More pressure brought more reward with a penalty from winger Alex Griffiths.
Bangor expected Rhyl to make a come back in the second half but great defence especially from flanker Declan Jones kept them out and when they wilted Bangor struck in force. Great work by the forwards brought them the possession they needed and centre Calvin Williams made the break through for a try converted by Griffiths. With their forwards driving forward prop Morgan Marston crossed for an unconverted try and 2nd row Harry Caulfield followed up with a well deserved try converted by Griffiths. Rhyl finally got on the score board in the last action of the game with a kick and chase bringing a try Louis Collins converted by Simon Evans.

WRU YOUTH DIVISION 2 N
BANGOR 55 – 0 WELSHPOOL YOUTH
Bangor were very grateful that Welshpool made the long journey north to fulfil their league fixture and with only 14 players the game was played with uncontested scrums. Under the league rules Bangor also played with 14 but had the advantage of being able to put on substitutes. The visitors gave Bangor a stiffer game than the score line suggests. Bangor fielded the ball well and made far fewer handling errors than last week and this gave them the edge to run in tries. The first came from flanker Declan Jones playing more like a spare three quarter and popping up on the wing to run around under the posts to make the conversion easy for Ivo de Jesus. The second came from forward Jordan Scott receiving the ball on the edge of a maul and powering over the line for another converted try. Ivo de Jesus added another try taking the ball on the blind side and touching down in the corner. His conversion made the score 21 - 0. Soon after de Jesus received a possible serious injury to the knee and had to go to hospital.
The second half continues in the same form with winger Calvin Williams going in at the corner followed by Declan Jones repeating his first half try and converting it his self. Dyfed Roberts powered over for his first try of the season and Calvin Williams finished off a move crossing in the corner for his second try. Harry Caulfield added another try and Jamie Davies powered over for his first of the season converted by Jordan Scott. Trystan Thomas stepped up from the younger ranks to play his his second game and proved to be a very useful scrumhalf with a good pass.

WRU YOUTH DIVISION 2 N
BANGOR 15 – 12 BRO FFESTINIOG YOUTH
Whilst the men’s team were struggling at Benllech, Bangor’s youth team pulled off a remarkable last gasp win against rivals Bro Ffestiniog taking the game with the last action of the match. Bangor had the weight advantage in the pack but the resulting disruption in the scrums brought a lot of free kicks against them. They created a good attacking platform but too often players took the ball into contact instead of spreading it wide. Bangor took the lead with a well struck penalty from Ivo de Jesus. Despite missing chances with uncharacteristic errors they got a first half try with winger Alex Griffiths rounding off the move.
The restart caught Bangor still relaxing and helped by some errors, Bro got the ball to their large centre Daniel Davies who made a lot of ground to score a fine try. After this the game settled down into a battle of attrition with frequent stoppages for injury and Bangor generally keeping the ball tight but after an hour of play Bro called for uncontested scrums and the game became more dynamic. Helped by Bangor’s handling errors they broke away with Davies handing on to his fellow centre and then taking the return pass to score the best try of the match. The conversion from scrum half Mathew Haydon gave them a 4 point lead and the game looked lost. Aided by some substitutions Bangor set up a barrage of rucks and mauls and after several close calls they forced the ball over the line with James Lee getting the touch down. The conversion from Declan Jones was the last action of the game.

lLanidloes Youth 5 Bangor Youth 29
20 players made this almost 3 hour journey to play a side that are yet to lose in the league. Llanidloes were a big side particularly the centres but Bangor were not put off and started the game very well. Good use of the conditions kept Bangor in good attacking positions. Llanidloes had a lot of good individual players but couldn't quite put it together as a team. Bangor denied their back line of any clean ball by constantly denying them time and space and keeping them on the back foot. Bangor were much more clinical with the forwards and backs combining well to score 4 tries in the first half with Calvin Williams, Harry Caulfield, Rhys Williams and Jordan Scott all crossing the whitewash and Ivo de Jesus put over 3 converts to make the half time score 26 - 0. The 2nd half was now against the elements for Bangor but they played the game intelligently in the Llanidloes half and defended well to stop them getting across the gain line. Constant pressure resulted in a Penalty which Ivo de Jesus slotted over for 3 points to make it 29 - 0. Llanidloes had a surge and deserved their try towards the end to make the final score 29 - 5 to Bangor. Overall a very good all round performance from all 20 players making the journey home a little easier.
BANGOR 27 - 13 BALA
Both teams fielded large strong squads and after a long delay waiting for the referee they eventually kicked off and got stuck in with gusto. Bangor struck first with a well worked try from Ivo de Jesus followed by his own conversion. Bala struck back with a well worked try. Bangor's flying winger Alex Griffiths restored the lead with a fine try and later increased it with a second. Bala were never far off the pace and and added their second try to stay in touch. Bangor stood up to the pressure well with some fine defence and fierce wrestling of the ball but gave away a lot of penalties. They took the lead to 10 points with a penalty from Ivo and Bala struck back with a penalty of their own. Bangor struck again at the very end when Declan Jones picked up a loose ball from the scrum and ran in under the posts for a converted try.
NANT CONWY 15 BANGOR 12
Although a good squad of 20 players turned up for this league match against Nant there were players from key positions missing resulting in back row players playing in the front row and a hooker in the 2nd row. Credit must be given to them for stepping up which told us a lot about these individuals. As predicted Nant started off the liveliest scoring a converted try within the 1st minute, they were more aggressive in the breakdown area and Bangor had to dig deep to contain the Nant attacks. Bangor did show good passages of play at times but needlessly kicked possession away or were turned over in the contact area. Another turn over for Nant resulted in their 2nd try which went unconverted and were leading 12 – 0 at half time. Bangor decided to play Rugby in the 2nd half and scored their 1st try with Declan going over for an unconverted try to make it 12 – 5. Nant were now struggling with the tempo of the game and it was all Bangor in the 2nd half, 3 times Bangor crossed the whitewash for the referee to judge they were held up on each occasion. Bangor finally got their rewards with a try from Jordan Scott which was converted by Ivo to make it 12 – 12 with 8 minutes to go. On the restart Bangor failed to clear their lines resulting in a penalty to Nant which they gratefully took to lead 15 – 12 with 3 mins to go. A game of 2 halves that Bangor could have won with a bit more composure but it was the work rate of the Nant forwards that edged it in their favour and Bangor will have to up their game for the next fixtures.
BANGOR 54 - FLINT 0
The youth division 2 is in some disarray. Bangor's scheduled fixture with Abergele was cancelled and Flint found their game with Llandudno was also cancelled so sportingly volunteered to travel to Bangor so that both teams could get their season underway. With a bit of a hiccup the game got underway after a referee was found. Bangor looked to be a bigger and older team but in fact were playing some of last years under 16 team who have progressed to the senior level. The game was not as one sided as it appears but Bangor put in a hard game and gave their visitors no mercy running in 4 tries in each half of the game. Try scorers were Ivo de Jesus, Gwion Williams (2), Rhys Owen, Sion Hughes, Rhys Williams (2) and Carwyn Roberts. Io de Jesus converted 7 tries.
